Lyveden New Bield
The work of Sir Thomas Tresham, Lyveden was started in 1593. a demonstration of faith, the building took religious themes. Inscriptions and emblems were used to illustrate their significance in a numerical format based upon three, five, seven and nine. It has three floors and is cruciform in plan, each arm being square. The bay windows at each end have five sides each five feet long. Each wing has a perimeter of 81 feet (9x9). As each wing is a square, they enclose a fifth square at the centre. Above the ground floor windows is a frieze of seven religious symbols; while on the upper frieze are inscribed quotations from the Latin Bible.
Sir Thomas was imprisoned in 1600 and died in 1605 before the building was completed.
