My brother was becoming impatient and gave a sharp tug of the rope and before I could retrieve my position I was hanging upside down looking down onto the bottom rocks and foaming sea. Left St Kilda in 1919. “The day the German submarine came in 1918, I was one of four watchmen that night up in a hut on Mullach Mor – the others were John and Donald MacQueen and John MacDonald. We were up there – we made hot tea, we would sleep and take it in turns to watch. We spotted the submarine coming in very slowly – we watched – and he stopped over by the Dun.
