The Gun & Dun
Neil Gillies (1896-1989). Left St Kilda in 1919.
“The day the German submarine came in 1918, I was one of four watchmen that night up in a hut on Mullach Mor – the others were John and Donald MacQueen and John MacDonald. We were up there – we made hot tea, we would sleep and take it in turns to watch. We spotted the submarine coming in very slowly – we watched – and he stopped over by the Dun. He came in closer and fired 75 shots and knocked down the aerials.”
