Mary Cameron. Daughter of Missionary Rev. Donald Cameron. On St Kilda 1919-1926
“Off the kitchen there opened a roomy pantry – a most fascinating place. There were no shops on St Kilda, and each household laid in its own supply of everything necessary for a year or so. This meant several sacks of flour and oatmeal; a hundredweight bag of sugar; tea by the stone; dozens of tins of syrup, treacle, meat and milk; butter in large tins prepared for export; whole cheeses; hams and bladders of lard; tins of biscuits and quantities of dried fruit, jam and so on.”
