“In St Kilda it was the custom to ‘intone’ the prayers. The man praying would start off in a normal, devout manner but as he warmed to his theme and his fervour grew, so he slipped (unconsciously, I believe) into a sing-song tone of voice gradually increasing the volume until he was practically singing.”
